Sony Ericsson to Release 4 New Handsets

Sony Ericsson last week announced four new handsets that will take its 2008 portfolio to seven.

The R306i Radio is a clamshell with two integrated speakers on the front and an external display that allows the user to see which station they are tuned into, while preset buttons let the user switch between stations. The radio can also be used as an alarm clock, or recordings can be taken from stations to be listened to later.

The handset, which comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera, also features the manufacturer�s TrackID service, which can give the artist and song title if the user records and sends a few seconds of a song they don�t recognise via SMS.

The other Radio handset is the R300i. It has a more traditional candybar design and, like the R306i, has preset buttons on the front to click between stations, while 3D sound enhancement or volume boost can be switched on with the Audio Enhancer key on the handset. It also features a built-in VGA camera.

The R306i will come in �Coffee Black� and �Champagne White� and will be available in Q3. The R300i will launch in �Antique Copper� and �Steel Black� in Q2.

The second pair of handsets � the T270i and T280i � are slim (less than 13mm) no-frills budget releases, using brushed light metal with a glass finish.

Both handsets will be available in silver on black and copper on silver, and hit the UK later this quarter.

Sony Ericsson has also announced deals with 10 major record labels, including Sony BMG, Warner and EMI, that will see more than five million music tracks added to its over-the-air download service PlayNow. More label deals are expected to follow.
